What makes a good leader? A good leader walks with integrity and honesty, both professionally and personally. A good leader doesn’t expect others to do what he wouldn’t do himself.
How did you get your start? My father purchased a fire protection contracting firm in 1995? I worked for the company for several summers during college.
What professional accomplishment(s) are you most proud of? Being asked to serve with the industry’s leaders on the various committees that I’ve been able to be a part of.
What has been your biggest challenge so far in your career? Trying to remain competitive in certain markets that lack the presence of a knowledgeable and informed AHJ to properly enforce the adopted codes and standards.
From your perspective, how is the industry’s outlook? The outlook is good. I think we still face some economic challenges ahead, but the industry continues to grow in leaps and bounds with technological advancements. I look forward to seeing where we go from here.
Where do you see yourself in five, 10 years? I’d like to be licensed as a Fire Protection Engineer within the next five years. Within 10 years I’d like to pursue a master’s degree in fire protection engineering.
If I were not in the fire protection industry, I probably would have continued to work within the manufacturing industry.
What would be your advice to someone new in the industry? Take every opportunity to participate in classes and online seminars. You can never get enough training. The fire protection industry is constantly changing. It’s the best way to keep up.
Favorite AFSA memory? There’s been quite a few. I really enjoyed touring FM Global’s facility (at the AFSA convention in Providence, R.I.) and getting to watch a side-by-side burn test.
